Tattoo Studio Inspections: What to Expect and How to Prepare

Why Tattoo Studios Are Inspected

Tattoo studios, like other personal service businesses, may be subject to scheduled or unscheduled inspections by relevant authorities. The aim is to ensure:

  • Compliance with health and hygiene regulations

  • Observance of fire safety protocols

  • Proper registration and business operation standards

  • Respect for consumer rights and ethical conduct

Unscheduled inspections can occur following a customer complaint or concerns about unsafe practices.

Types of Tattoo Studio Checks

Tattoo studio inspections typically fall into two categories:

1. Documentary Inspections

These involve a review of your studio’s official documentation, including:

  • Business registration and operating licenses

  • Staff qualifications and training certificates

  • Contracts and service records

  • Sanitation and waste disposal logs

This type of inspection is conducted at the supervising authority’s location. Studios are expected to submit documents within a given timeframe.

2. On-Site Inspections

These are more comprehensive and include physical visits to the tattoo studio. Inspectors assess:

  • Cleanliness and layout of the premises

  • Availability of sterilization equipment

  • Waste disposal procedures

  • Workstations and hygienic practices of tattoo artists

  • Use of certified, disposable supplies

  • Fire exits and emergency signage

Tattoo hygiene standards and client safety are at the heart of every on-site inspection.

What Happens After the Inspection?

Following any inspection — whether documentary or on-site — a written report (inspection act) is prepared. This document outlines:

  • The areas that were checked

  • Any violations or recommendations

  • Deadlines for correction (if applicable)

The studio owner or representative is invited to sign the report. If there are disagreements, the studio has the right to submit a formal response or appeal the findings, depending on local regulations.

Do You Need Support?

Even if your studio meets all hygiene and operational requirements, preparing for an inspection alone can be challenging — especially if it’s your first time.

The Global Tattoo Association offers support for tattoo studios before, during, and after inspection. We can help you:

  • Understand inspection checklists

  • Prepare essential documentation

  • Identify weak points in your setup

  • Organize internal audits for better compliance

For members and partners of our Association, going through a tattoo studio audit becomes a manageable and structured process.
